In line with the Product Development Charter, the Xsara was developed in 196 weeks. The program required a total investment of $1.2 billion, including $500 million in development costs. With the Product Development Charter, Citroën was able to optimise costs by conducting a detailed upstream analysis of the industrial aspects of the program.
In addition to the road tests conducted on prototypes, pre-production models of the Citroën Xsara were driven for a distance of more than 4,300,000 km. This total rose to five million km by the launch date.
The question of recycling was taken into account right from the beginning of the development phase, with the decision on the materials to be used on the Xsara. All parts are marked to make it easy to sort the materials into groups when the car is disassembled. To protect the environment, the Xsara brake linings are asbestos-free and the paint is cadmium-free.
The synthetic materials used emit no pollutants in production or recycling. The use of polypropylene parts facilitates sorting when the different synthetic components are separated for re-use.
