A NEW ERA FOR CITROËN
ARRIVES WITH THE C5
The unveiling of the all-new Citroën C5 at
the Paris International Motor Show
today (28 September 2000) represents the start of a new era for the French
maker with not just the arrival of a new naming system for its models, but also
the arrival of a new model that follows in the footsteps of its illustrious
predecessors by setting a new standard in automotive design, technology and
style.
Larger than the car it replaces, the new
Citroën C5 is, at 1.48 metres, unusually tall in its class and this
provides more than just a distinctive style. Combined with a floor that is both
low and flat, it endows the Citroën C5 with outstanding interior space and
a semi-raised driving position.
But it is under the stylish skin that the new
C5 really excels.
It boasts the third generation of the
Citroën Hydractive suspension system
that provides a unique level of ride comfort and roadholding. It is a fully
active suspension system that changes how it reacts depending on road
conditions and how the car is being driven. For example, as well as offering
Citroën's unique and acclaimed 'magic carpet' ride comfort, the new C5
alters the ride height of the vehicle depending on road conditions. At freeway
speeds it lowers the car on to the road and by lowering the front and rear of
the car by different amounts, not only optimizes air flow for low drag, it also
changes the centre of gravity of the car for better high speed
stability.
When the suspension detects rough road
surfaces, it raises the car above obstructions. At the same time it also
monitors how the C5 is being driven and either automatically or by driver
command it can move between a normal suspension response and a sport mode with
a stiffer suspension setting. Yet despite this unique level of technology, the
Hydractive system requires no maintenance for five years or 200,000
km.
The use of a multiplex computer controlled electrical system has
enabled the C5 to offer a host of additional equipment and features black panel
instruments, wipers that switch on automatically and adjust their speed to
rainfall and road speed, headlights that switch on and off automatically,
hazard lights that come on in the advent of an accident, low tyre pressure
warning systems, variable assistance power steering, windows and sunroof that
close automatically when it rains, rear parking radar, multi-function central
locking and two LCD TV screens for driver information.
Nor has safety been ignored. As well as the
safety provided by the third generation Hydractive suspension, the Citroën
C5 has the latest ABS brake system with emergency braking assistance, traction
control and six airbags, including the latest side curtain
airbags.
Initially the Citroën C5 will be available
with a choice of two engines, the 3.0 litre V6 with an eight per cent power
boost to 152 KW and Citroën's remarkable 2.2 litre 98 kW HDI turbo direct
injection common rail diesel engine. Both are available with a choice of manual
or auto-adaptive automatic gearbox with a choice of normal automatic operation
of sequential manual shifting.
The all-new Citroën C5 will be launched in
Australia in the second quarter of 2001 when full Australian pricing and
specification will be announced.
