CITROEN XSARA
PUSHES CITROEN AHEAD IN 1998 Citroen's European sales
rose by more than nine per cent in 1998, pushed ahead by the outstanding
success of the Citroen Xsara, which added more than a quarter of a million
sales to its account during the year. Launched in Australia last year
and having a similar dramatic effect on local sales, the Citroen Xsara is
proving to be one of the French car maker's most successful new models of all
time, not just in France but in every market in which it is sold.
Citroen's nine per cent increase in sales last year put it comfortably
ahead of the overall increase in the market, which grew by seven per cent to
nearly 14.5 million new cars. With sales of 1.6 million, the PSA Group, of
which Citroen is one half, was the largest French carmaker.
