CITROËN REIGNS IN
SPAIN
Citroen has thwarted attempts by Spain's own
motor industry to take the number one slot in one of Europe's largest car
markets, with the Citroen Xsara taking the number one spot with a market share
of 7.3 per cent.
The French car maker has also dominated the
diesel car sector and light commercial vehicles, with the Citroen Berlingo
establishing itself as the number one van in Spain. At the same time Citroen is
dominating the medium sedan market sector with Citroen Xantia topping the sales
charts. Combined, these sales give Citroen sales of more than 150,000 vehicles
in Spain in the first ten months of the year, an increase of 19.3 per cent. By
the end of 1998, Citroen plans to have sold more than 175,000 vehicles in the
Spanish market.
Meanwhile in Latin America, the Citroen Xsara
has taken the top imported car position, just three months after its launch in
Brazil. With an increase of 132 per cent so far this year, the Brazilian sales
increase is even more impressive than the 50 per cent increase achieved here in
Australia. With the Citroen Xsara arriving in Argentina this month, the French
car maker expects similar sales records to be broken in Latin America's second
largest country.
Back in Europe, Citroen returned from the
British International Motor Show with a host of awards. The Saxo VTS was chosen
by 'MAX POWER', the UK's top selling motoring title, as the best new car in
1998. The Citroen C3 was voted the best concept car in the IBCAM British Steel
Car Design Awards, the Berlingo Multispace was voted the best small people
mover and the Berlingo van collected the van of the year award.
